Zambia has been hosting refugees for many years.

United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Commissioner Filippo Grandi has disclosed that UNHCR has disbursed over US$17 million for the past four years towards integration of refugees.
He disclosed this when he paid a courtesy call on Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Stephen Kampyongo at his office on Wednesday evening.
Mr. Grandi said this has covered for refugees from Angola and Rwanda.
He however observed the need to mobilize more resources towards this program.
Mr. Grandi also thanked the people of Zambia and the government for their hospitality in hosting refugees from other countries.
“Let me thank the Zambian Government and the people in general for their continued support in hosting and accepting refugees from other countries. I chose to visit Zambia because of the high number of refugees the country is hosting,” he said.
He said the sacrifice by the people of Zambia to accept and live with refugees is commendable.
And Hon Kampyongo said Mr. Grandi will visit Mantapala Refugee Camp which is hosting over 15, 000 refugees from neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The Home Affairs Minister said the government and other partners are yet to aggregate the new arrivals.
Hon Kampyongo indicated that Zambia has been grappling with post refugee status.
He also said President Edgar Lungu has been instrumental in terms of addressing challenges refugees are facing.
Meanwhile, Luapula Province Minister Hon Nickson Chilangwa thanked the UNHCR for their continued support for many years in terms of helping refugees.
The UNHCR Commissioner is also expected to pay a courtesy call on President Lungu on Thursday.
